Conflict >> friction >> heat

Friday, October 30th, 2009

We are a planet in conflict. Conflict creates friction.

Friction creates heat.

Heat=Climate change. Here’s the latest in the state of affairs.

After my last post which was somewhat hopeful about climate change, the news has been less so, with a lot of equivocating. Not all is lost, yet, but certainly the big commitments that are needed from governments and businesses aren’t materializing.

The New York Times reported on Oct 20 that, “With the clock running out and deep differences unresolved, it now appears that there is little chance that international climate change negotiations in Copenhagen in December will produce a comprehensive and binding new treaty on global warming.

There’s a sense of overwhelm because as usual we started too late in taking measures to mitigate climate change. Vested interests want to only do the minimum, which is how we got here in the first place. According to NPR, “President Barack Obama’s visit to China next month is not likely to yield a separate accord on countering global warming…

There’s quite a bit of talk about investing in clean energy, its technology and potential for job creation and revenue. Where this talk leads is up in the air. Bloomberg reported recently that, “Billionaire George Soros, looking to address the “political problem” of climate change, said he will invest $1 billion in clean-energy technology and donate $100 million to an environmental advisory group to aid policymakers.

Developed and developing nations are squabbling over who must pay for measures to mitigate this threat we’re all facing. The New York Times is posting such headlines as Biggest Obstacle to Global Climate Deal May Be How to Pay for It, and NPR reports EU can’t agree on how much climate aid to give.

Fortunately, this isn’t the only news in climate change. Blog Action Day which took place on Oct 15 generated 31,000 trackable blog posts in 155 countries. The Reiki Help Blog was one of 13,000 participating blogs, and news of the event even made CNN.

There’s also similar people-based action on climate change featured below. Why is this important?

Two reasons:

1) There has to be a groundswell of citizen voices, demands and actions, for leaders aren’t stepping up.

2) Behavior, psychology and the mindset can only be changed by massive commitments to mitigating this monster.

A disturbing story on NPR had this to say: “…a new poll by the Pew Research Center for People and the Press shows a big jump in the number of people who doubt the reality, the cause and the risks of global warming. Last year, for example, 71 percent of those polled believed the Earth was getting warmer, regardless of the cause. This year, 57 percent believe that – still a sizable majority but a 14 percent drop over the course of one year.

This, despite a recent study linking climate change to worsening of diseases.

Adam Corner has an insightful reason why this is so. In an astute piece he writes, “But until now, a key piece has been missing from the puzzle – psychology. The study of human behaviour has been conspicuous by its absence from the climate change debate.

Apparently even in the good old United Kingdom people “don’t feel personally threatened by climate change because it is vague, abstract and difficult to visualise.”

That’s why an organization I’m recently enamored of, 350.org, is one with which I strongly encourage you to become involved.

350.org is an international campaign dedicated to building a movement to unite the world around solutions to the climate crisis–the solutions that science and justice demand. Our mission is to inspire the world to rise to the challenge of the climate crisis—to create a new sense of urgency and of possibility for our planet.

Our focus is on the number 350–as in parts per million, the level scientists have identified as the safe upper limit for CO2 in our atmosphere. But 350 is more than a number–it’s a symbol of where we need to head as a planet.

To tackle climate change we need to move quickly, and we need to act in unison—and 2009 will be an absolutely crucial year.  This December, world leaders will meet in Copenhagen, Denmark to craft a new global treaty on cutting emissions. The problem is, the treaty currently on the table doesn’t meet the severity of the climate crisis—it doesn’t pass the 350 test.

In order to unite the public, media, and our political leaders behind the 350 goal, we’re harnessing the power of the internet to coordinate a planetary day of action on October 24, 2009.  We hope to have actions at hundreds of iconic places around the world – from the Taj Mahal to the Great Barrier Reef to your community – and clear message to world leaders: the solutions to climate change must be equitable, they must be grounded in science, and they must meet the scale of the crisis.

If an international grassroots movement holds our leaders accountable to the latest climate science, we can start the global transformation we so desperately need.

Teaching in Person

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009
I've been teaching local Reiki classes for the first time this month, and tonight my Kundalini Reiki class of eight wonderful students will receive their final attunement. I'm also teaching Reiki for Parents, and it's going very well.

I was nervous at the start, because all of my Reiki teaching, with the exception of one-on-one classes, has been remotely via my website. There have been over 200 students in the past year and a half, and that's a lot! I am confident and absolutely adore teaching Reiki. But facing a class full of people in a room was somehow a little daunting to me. It's funny too, because I'm a teacher, and have been teaching kids and teens various subjects for over 13 years. But a room full of adults? That felt different!

I took a leap. I trusted that all would be well, and that my teaching ability and passion for Reiki would support me in helping everyone understand and feel the energy. I had to decide how I would attune everyone, since I knew I could do it all at once by simple intention. Instead, I decided I would pass along the attunements individually to everyone in class (I touched each person on the shoulders, intending for him or her to be attuned as he or she intended to accept the attunement). Then I moved to the next person, and at the end, I sat at the table and felt the energy flowing between my hands as it continued working. After about 20 minutes, everyone opened up their eyes, having felt the attunement energy reach completion. Kundalini Reiki attunements don't have the ritualized aspects of Usui Reiki attunements, so no more is needed than simple intention for passing the attunements along. Once everyone had opened their eyes, each person spoke of his or her experience, and each person's was unique and yet powerful. I can't express how grateful I am for the ability to help open people to Reiki energy and that it works every time.

Everyone returned the next week with stories about helping other people with Reiki, or their pets, and one person even saw his plant improve after he gave it Reiki! Some of them had sent distance healing, and it was felt and the recipient felt better. It was really exciting to see how they had all started realizing the benefits of Reiki, and experienced the results for themselves.

Some of my students have been in touch with me via email in between classes, with questions, or to share their excitement about the power of Reiki. I love hearing from them.

So this has been a wonderful experience for me as well, and a learning experience too. I learned that I am capable of facing a class full of students, and giving the information about Reiki clearly, as well as passing on attunements in person. I learned that I can share my passion for teaching Reiki in person as well as via email, and it's equally well received. I shed my anxiety over teaching adults, and feel much more confident now.

I look forward to more opportunities to teach local Reiki classes and more distance students as well. I truly believe that everyone should learn Reiki because there are so many benefits and we all have this power inside us to tap into for our own healing and wellness. I am blessed and so very grateful for the opportunity to work with each person that gives me the chance.

Peace.

Sunday Morning Coming Down

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

Then I crossed the empty street,
'n caught the Sunday smell of someone fryin' chicken.
And it took me back to somethin',
That I'd lost somehow, somewhere along the way.

I'm sitting here this morning drinking coffee and listening to old songs. Thinking about my dad.

In Reiki we often talk about removing past connections that hinder us. We work with things like Karmic Bond Cleansing, Etheric Cord Flushing and various other ways of working with energy to restore balance.

As I sit here this morning and listen to Cash and Kristofferson sing, I'm reminded that sometimes our past has a beautiful effect on our present.

Thanks Dad for having that effect.

The Energy of Walking

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

Two months ago I started walking every day. I LOVE walking. The experience is almost religious for me on so many levels.

Why I Love Walking
  • Like many of you I'm sure, I sit in my office for long hours each day. Walking connects me with Nature. Fresh air. The sounds of corns stalks ripping in the wind. The hustle and bustle of people working in their yards - children playing with friends. That smell - fresh, invigorating and relaxing at the same time.
  • Walking is Spiritual. It doesn't take long before my heart and my head connect in a way that allows me to sense Spirit in my life. I think, feel and experience on a much deeper level when walking. What's going on in my life seems to flow. I work out many details, problems, plans whilst putting one foot in front of the other. I connect with Something greater than myself.
  • The obvious - walking is physical. Heart rate up - muscles strengthened - bad out, good in. I feel better after a good stroll.
  • Walking Redirects Time. Huh? Here's my thing: When I walk, I have more time for the things I need to get accomplished. I never see walking as a time stealer. I get a ton more done before my walk because I use it as a reward for completing my tasks. I find more energy, both physical and creative energy after my walk as well. Walking redirects my time. Make sense?
  • Walking helps me as a Healer. As a Reiki Master, after walking, my connection to spiritual life force energy is so much more fine-tuned. I sense the energy in a deeper, more substantial way. The energy has a better vessel to work with as it moves in healing ways. I am a better channel for this energy because I walk on a daily basis.
There you have it.

I think it's time for a walk!

Blessings,
Frank

Typhoon Reiki

Reiki-Typhoon

‘Tis Typhoon season again here in Japan and with the damage recently inflicted by Typhoon Parma in the Philippines it really got me to thinking about it… from a Reiki perspective… and here is what I came up with.

Before I begin I’d like to encourage all of my readers to take a moment to send some Reiki to the Philippines… there is a lot of cleaning up to do, a lot of hurt to heal and a lot of pain to soothe. And I know there will be a lot of appreciation if you do… so go ahead… I’ll wait… <insert sound of fingers drumming> THANKS!

Typhoon Reiki

Now turning to Typhoon Reiki (no this isn’t yet another style of Reiki) it seems to me that typhoon, earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. are very angry. Whether Mother Nature is actually angry at us for continuing to destroy the natural beauty all around us on a daily basis or if the anger just resides in my over active imagination is regardless… thoughts have tremendous power, with or without adding Reiki to them, and the damage being inflicted, on many levels, is very real.

That is why, in addition to sending Reiki to the people and places damaged by these tropical storms I also encourage you to send Reiki to the typhoon itself… but as intention must be focused in order to be effective it must be done a certain way… and that is by focusing on the anger aspect.

Just as in using Reiki to deal with any other emotion issue, use the mental/emotional healing symbol and send it directly to the anger the typhoon is emanating. Those Reiki practitioners who make it a habit to empathize with their recipients need to be very careful, because the level of anger in a storm is vastly more powerful than that felt by a human, and I wouldn’t advice attempting to do so unless you are quite practiced in it.

In one school of Hawaiian Shamanism (Huna) there is a practice called grokking where the healer “becomes one” with  the storm and slowly guides it away from the region. This is a very advanced practice, and quite dangerous for the inexperienced, but the principle is based around the idea that the storm has consciousness and that consciousness can be directly influenced. Since consciousness requires thought, and thought requires a thinker, it follows that there are also emotions that are possibly attached to that thinker. That is the level that we are concerned with here.

Hopefully, by understanding the mechanisms involved you will be able to direct your Reiki much more efficiently. While sending Reiki to the storm in general, it is much more effective if you focus it internally and send a Reiki Blast to the causes of the storm… which is the anger and violence it seems to be manifesting.

The more you practice this particular technique the easier and more automatic it will become… and doing so will take you a long way towards achieving Total Reiki Mastery. :-)
